Companies House Identity Verification – Mandatory from 18 November 2025
18 November 2025
From 18 November 2025, Companies House will introduce mandatory identity verification for directors, People with Significant Control (PSCs), and anyone submitting filings on behalf of a company. This change forms part of the Economic Crime and Corporate Transparency Act and represents one of the most significant updates to UK company law in decades.
If you run a company – or plan to form one – you need to be ready for the new rules.
This date is not a deadline. It marks the start of a 12-month transition period, giving your company time to make sure all directors and people with significant control (PSCs) have verified their identity by their due dates.
Who must verify their identity?
Companies House will require identity checks for:
- New directors will need to verify their identity to incorporate a company or be appointed to an existing company
- Existing directors will need to confirm they have verified their identity at the same time as they file their next annual confirmation statement, during a 12-month transition period
- Existing PSCs will need to verify their identity in line with an appointed day within 12 months of the commencement of mandatory identity verification on 18 November
What happens on and after 18 November 2025?
- Companies House will not accept new director appointments without proof of identity.
- Companies will need to ensure their directors and PSCs complete verification before their next confirmation statement, or sooner if requested.
- Individuals will be issued a unique verified identity code to link them to company roles and future filings.
There may be delays or compliance risks for those who fail to act promptly.
How verification will work
There will be two approved routes:
- Direct verification with Companies House
Individuals use their passport, driving licence, or other approved ID to complete a secure online check. This is a free-to-use service – https://www.gov.uk/guidance/verify-your-identity-for-companies-house - Verification through an Authorised Corporate Service Provider (ACSP)
This option is ideal for those who prefer managed compliance.
Why early preparation matters
The 18 November 2025 start date will affect:
- Company formations
- Changes to directors
- Confirmation statements
- PSC updates
- Any filings submitted by individuals
Ensuring your directors and PSCs complete verification early will help avoid rejected filings, administrative delays, or potential compliance breaches once the new regime takes effect.
