The deadline for paper tax returns falls on or before midnight on 31 October. Only 468,447 paper tax returns (less than 5% of the total) were filed by this deadline last year, relating to the 2019/20 tax year.
The paper method of reporting taxable income is winding down and will soon be replaced with Making Tax Digital for income tax self-assessment (MTD for ITSA) currently scheduled to start from April 2024.
This means that when it is time to to file your 2024/25 tax return on or before 31 January 2026, for most taxpayers, online will be your only option.
Online submissions already make up over 95% of the total and so it is expected that this change will only affect a minority of taxpayers.
For online submissions of your 2020/21 tax return, the deadline falls at midnight on 31 January 2022.
